Species diversity in a Cuban home garden.
Home gardens often contain multiple levels
comprised by: taller trees (>5m)
such as Sapotacea and Artocarpus;
a second canopy of
shorter, often fruit-bearing trees like Citrus and Musa;
shrubs such as Euphorbia; herbaceous
plants like Capsicum,
Brassica, and Curcurbita; and Xanthosoma, Colocasia, and other
roots
and tubers. Climbing vines such as Phaseolus and Luffa often span levels. The
vertical and
horizontal diversity of home gardens efficiently utilizes the
sunlight, soil nutrient, and water
resource niches of the garden.
